Early years settings can access the universal supervised toothbrushing programme in Tower Hamlets.  The programme is available for children aged 3-5 years.

Tooth decay is preventable but is common; 3 in 10 children in reception year at school have tooth decay in Tower Hamlets.

It can cause pain and discomfort, making it harder for children to eat, speak, sleep and learn well at school.

Supporting our youngest children to develop good oral health habits will help them to have healthy teeth for life.

Young Health Hub Oral Health Team provide FREE kits and support for this programme.

What is supervised toothbrushing and how can it help?

Children aged 3-5 years are encouraged to brush their teeth every day with supervision from staff in the early years setting.

Supervised Toothbrushing helps children to have healthy teeth by:

  • Teaching children how to brush their teeth
  • Making toothbrushing normal and fun by brushing as a group
  • Protecting teeth from decay by using fluoride toothpaste
  • Encouraging children to brush their teeth at home

Children brush for two minutes every day, using a method called ‘dry brushing’ with fluoride toothpaste, and with guidance and supervision from staff.  Dry brushing means no water is used during brushing and children do not rinse with water. After brushing, children spit any remaining toothpaste into a clean tissue, which is then thrown away. This method helps fluoride stay on the teeth for longer and gives extra protection against tooth decay.

Each child is given their own toothbrush that is clearly labelled and stored in a toothbrush rack to keep it clean and separated from other brushes.

All toothpastes used in the supervised toothbrushing programme are mint flavoured, do not contain any animal products, and are gluten free.

How can my setting get involved?

You can get in touch with the Young Health Hub Oral Health Team if you want to take part in the supervised toothbrushing programme if you are an early years setting or provider.

The Young Health Hub provides training and the equipment needed to early years staff and settings.

Parents and caregivers of children attending a participating setting will be asked to complete a consent form, and return it to the setting.

Once the setting has received a completed consent form, the child can join the programme and start brushing daily.

Please contact us if you have any questions or are a Tower Hamlets early years setting or provider who wants to get involved in the programme.
